Have you ever witnessed a child’s first interaction with Christmas lights? It is truly magical! One of my favorite things about this season are the incredible light displays neighbors painstakingly create. With nightfall coming earlier each day, my walks become joyfully illuminated with twinkling holiday lights. I think of the three magi following the star to Bethlehem, their way brightened by radiating light. Their eyes were filled with wonder.
We experience the wondrous every day…
The rivers that flow and waterfalls that cascade unceasingly – wonder.
Mammals, birds and insects that migrate seasonally and always know when to come back home – wonder.
Bees creating incredible colonies, collecting pollen and nectar to transform into honey – wonder.
Birth of a baby in both the animal kingdom and humankind – wonder.
Incredible power of healing in our bodies – wonder.
Billions of stars and galaxies in the heaven – wonder
It’s the season of wonder. When the holidays roll around, it brings to mind the awe of Christ coming to earth as a baby for something even greater than celebrating Christmas. It is that He came to live as a lowly man, knowing that His life would be sacrificed so that all of mankind would have an opportunity for eternal life. Wonder.
Do you have childlike wonder? Have you become so use to the things around that you are no longer in awe of the miraculous? When do we become nonchalant? Wonder is defined as a feeling of surprise mingled with admiration, caused by something beautiful, unexpected, unfamiliar or inexplicable. It is easy to take things for granted. Life gets busy and we become consumed with getting things done. The focus is to accomplish rather than to enjoy and simply immerse ourselves in the experience.
The holidays are an incredible time to consciously take moments to experience wonder. Enjoy the feeling of expectancy…anticipation of good things. I understand this can also be a season of sadness for some who may be mourning a loss. Hang on to the glimpses of joy that inevitably will sneak in. Joy begets joy. Look for the miraculous in the mundane. Perhaps, try to find three awe inspiring things each day. I think you’ll be surprised at how quickly you’ll reach three and beyond! Wonder.
