Dual vs. Duel

Dual (adj) consisting of two parts, elements or aspects.

Duel (n)  a contest with deadly weapons arranged between two people in order to settle a point of honor.

This Word Well Wednesday is a little bit different.  We’re still visiting like sounding words and their meanings, however, this will be the springboard into something new.  Continue reading to find out what’s ahead.

Dual, meaning consisting of two parts, elements or aspects, seems fitting for one of today’s words.  As I launch into my second year of publically sharing my writing, the focus will begin to transition to even more faith driven encouragement.  Some of the topics from past blog posts will be revisited and developed more with in-depth look at how faith can impact daily living.

There was a dual purpose for launching a website. Though, until this week, I was uncertain where it was leading me. The first year was writing, getting the words down and practicing the gift.  It was also a lesson in discipline.  Writing every week and posting two features required consistency and thoughtful preparation.  When I first began, a year loomed long; I wasn’t sure I was up for the task.  Slowly, as I wrote more and more, it became clear the direction I was headed.  Now, I see that this website truly has a dual purpose.

Dual purpose, living in the world but living for God.  Loving people despite their differences and embracing the prickliness that comes with it.  It is a balancing act and some do it better than others. Future blog posts will explore how to find the balance and tap into experiences from those who are doing it well.

Duel, the other word for today.  Living a life of faith is an ongoing battle.  It is striving to not be conformed to the world – social media demands, fashion trends, diet fads, news obsessions, etc. – and trying to be a light in the midst of all the societal pulls. Duels have a finality to them.  Someone wins and someone loses.  They’re quick and then done.  Battles can rage on for years.  We fight, we cope, we move forward.  Let’s tap into how others continue to find the strength to overcome and apply it to our struggles.  More encouragement coming your way!

Today, officially marks the conclusion of Word Well Wednesday.  But don’t despair.  The like sounding, different meaning word exploration will continue from time to time.  There are too many words that are laughable with their duality.

Stay tuned for more exciting updates.
