Pen (n) a writing or drawing instrument with ink
Pen (n) a fenced enclosure for animals
Pen (n) a female swan
Pens are one of those things that I could buy many of. Why? They come in so many shapes, sizes, colors and thicknesses. Each pen has its own personality – as if an inanimate object could have a personality! I like the variety and choose a pen based on the mood I’m in and what I’m about to write. It’s true, much of my writing is done electronically, however, I still write personal letters and notes. The character of the composing derives from the frame of mind I’m in and the type of pen I use. Have you ever walked down the art supply aisle in one of those large craft stores? I am fascinated by all the options of tools for scribing – calligraphy, fine, chiseled, felt, rollerball, brush – the list goes on! Don’t even get me started on the color options!
Pens are the gateway to creativity. Doodles and manuscripts have long originated from the points of many pens. I can’t be the only one who is inspired by such a simple instrument. What thoughts or images come to mind when you pick up a pen? Give a child a blank piece of paper and a pen and see what creativity is unleased. It’s fascinating. Do the same for an adult and the results will be as unique as each of the individuals. If you’re ever bored, sit down for a moment and try it. You may find yourself suddenly lost in a far-off world.
Pens are also defined as enclosures for animals, another one of my favorite things! We have an animal sanctuary close by. It’s a fun place to visit and watch the antics of the animals. There is quite a variety of rescued critters living their best lives. Animals are grouped together in the labyrinth of pens. There are a few goats living alongside a blind cow and horses have an incredible pen that gives them the opportunity to wander or gallop around the other animals without harming them. Pigs have their enclosure complete with a mud pit and the ducks next door have multiple pools to keep their feet and bills wet. It is a beautiful design of pens catering to the needs of once unwanted critters now living a wonderful life in their forever home.
The architecture of pens varies as well. From the haphazard temporary shelters to thoughtful planned out elaborate domiciles, pens provide protection. I have seen some pens where it is a quick fence created to protect the animals from predators or simply there to provide a boundary to keep the critters from wandering away. Other pens have tiny houses that mirror the residence of the people with lots of detail and color. Pens are as varied as homes in a neighborhood.
In addition to writing pens and enclosure pens, I discovered that female swans are called pens too! After all these years of reading and writing, I am still learning and uncovering the adventures of words. Do you have any odd words you’d like me to highlight in an upcoming Word Well Wednesday?
