Even though I have been running a bit behind on my writing this week, it was important to me to maintain my traditional Wednesday post. Instead of Word Well Wednesday, let’s temporarily call today’s feature, Word Well Wonder and leave the designated timeframe behind!
Are you present today? If you’re like many people, the crush of the holiday is beginning to wear on you. Too many things to do and the clock continues to tick closer to the twelfth hour! You’re present, but feeling like it’s an out-of-body experience, trying to accomplish super human tasks and create holiday spirit for kids, family and friends. It can be a challenge to be truly present in each moment. Is all the rush necessary? Can we modify our expectations of the perfect Christmas to accommodate our enjoyment as well as the delight of those around us?
How we present ourselves in the midst of holiday chaos easily affects those closest to us. If we’re frazzled its likely our kids, significant others and everyone we come in contact with will feel our unease. Not exactly spreading holiday cheer! In my attempt to minimize any last-minute meltdown, I had a ‘to do’ list outlining tasks for each day this week leading up to Christmas. It has helped tremendously and for a long-time procrastinator, it’s progress! We’re down to the last few days – here’s hoping my plan continues to be successful.
To balance out the task list, I made certain to plan holiday outings with friends and family. Simple highlights to intentionally spend focused time enjoying the spirit of the season being present. Whether driving the neighborhood seeking out the best light displays, going to the downtown holiday parade or taking an elderly friend to a local musical, it provided balance and wonderful memories in the midst of organizing and shopping.
One of the greatest presents you can give to your loved ones is being present. Savor the moments with friends; play the silly games with the kids and grandkids; pause on the sofa and have an unhurried conversation with your aging grandparents. The wrapped gifts are great but nothing compares to the meaningful time spent with people. Time truly is the most precious present.
Do you feel the excitement? Just a few sleeps away and Christmas will be here! May you and your loved ones immerse yourselves in the presence of our Savior, enjoying the greatest present ever presented to us. Merry Christmas!
