Write (v) composing a message using letters or symbols.
Right (adv) morally good, just or acceptable; (n) legal entitlement;
Rite (n) Solemn ceremony or act; social custom
I do a lot of writing – not only the blog posts, but I write cards, letters and notes daily. There is something very therapeutic about putting thoughts on a computer or paper that makes them real. Until then, they spin in my head – endlessly. I feel like it makes room for more thoughts once I place them onto a concrete place to save. It is a never-ending cycle of creativity. The compositions may not all be stellar soliloquies but they are original, often reflecting my state of mind. It definitely helps me to sort my thoughts out.
Right has a number of meanings, some reflecting acceptable behavior and others simply referring to a direction. If you’re correct, you are right. If an object has fallen, you may return it to its righted position. If you’re turning, you may be going left or right. Hopefully, you’re going the right way!
Let’s add one more to the mix. Rite is a solemn ceremony. It may be religious or tied to an organization such as scouts. A rite of passage refers to significant time in someone’s life – birth, puberty, marriage or death. We’ve all experienced these rites. They reflect our journey and mark milestones, typically of aging. As a kid, we welcome these rites; as an adult, not so much!
I think when putting pen to paper, these three words are easily confused in spelling – especially for kids. What purpose does the silent w play in write other than befuddlement? How about the gh in right? I think more often than not, all the right/write/rite words are commonly spelled r-i-t-e regardless of their meaning. This is one of those incidents that spell check isn’t going to help you! Knowing the definitions and usage is key. Oh, how those second and third graders will battle these words! Similar is the struggle we may face when we’re questioning, am I right? Are we demonstrating confidence or self-righteousness in being correct? For today I think I’ll keep it chill – Right on!
