Seasons

The colors of this season are incredible!  The vibrant oranges, reds and yellows signal the transition of summertime into the cozy of autumn.  When I’m in the midst of summer, I don’t even want to think about the cooler temps on the horizon.  I’m enjoying the heat along with time in the lake.  Then, something starts to happen – I begin to grow tired of the repetitive warmth and the activities that go alongside.  I think partly this is because I have a short attention span; the same routine, though comforting, becomes monotonous and boring.  Since my husband and I have a wide variety of interests, seemingly having enough time to do all the things wanes as the summer continues.  We need the cooler weather to push us indoors to pursue the other hobbies. When it is cold and rainy being inside is a welcome change.  There are no excuses to have to choose to remain indoors.

As autumn unfolds, the reminder of all my other leisure pursuits comes to light.  The sweat shirts appear, fall décor begins to adorn the house and the sweet smell of cloves and cinnamon wafts in the air. The craft room has puffs of wool scattered among the fabric swatches calling to become the next Etsy-worthy creation. Before I know it, I am embracing the new season, once again, not wanting to let go for the next on the horizon.

God created us perfectly in an ever-changing world.  We cling to the here-and-now easily since it is tangible.  The visible gets the attention.  We don’t want to look ahead.  Rather, we immerse ourselves in the comfort of what we know. Living in this moment is good!  Conversely, we can easily get caught up always searching for the next thing, totally oblivious to the joy that we’re currently experiencing. My grandson is always looking forward to the next season, the holidays and celebrations that follow.  Reminding him of where he is currently, focuses his awareness of the goodness happening now.  Don’t let the goodness slip away while you’re focusing on what’s next. Soak up the season God has you in without fear of what lies ahead.  Slowly, our hearts change; doubt of the future changes to anticipation of the adventure that awaits.  Don’t rush the transition; embrace today.  Move forward too quickly, awkward happens.  If we’re not yet ready to progress, forcing advancement can quickly become a struggle.  Battling timing can be exhausting.  Waiting is all part of the journey; the season will change.

Are you content in this season or do you find yourself distracted by anticipating the next thing on the horizon?
